Riley Denning Westergard, 83, died Thursday, January 9, 1997, in St George, Utah, of natural causes.

He was born in Iona, Idaho on March 26, 1913, a son of Peter Holst and Sarah Adell Denning Westergard. He grew up in the Iona/Ammon area and after high school attended Idaho State University.

He married Iris Oswald on June 6, 1934, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. He lived in the Iona area all of his life and farmed, ranched and worked in the potato processing industry, retiring from Rogers Brothers after 36 years of service.

After retirement, he received the Russett Aristocrat Award in 1986, given by the Idaho Growers and Shippers Association for outstanding service to the potato industry. In 1976, he served as president of that organization and also served a term on the Idaho Potato Commission.

Always honest and fair in business dealings, he was considered a man of his word.

He was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many capacities throughout his life, including the Stake Presidency and as and officiator in the Idaho Falls temple. His first wife, Iris, died on February 8, 1984. He married Ruth Schwieder Tracy on August 18, 1984. They have lived in Iona and spent their winters in St. George, Utah.
