Royalty, Viceroy of Italy, Duke of Leuchtenberg. Son of Alexandre Francois de Beauharnais and Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de la Pagerie. His parents were imprisoned during the Reign of Terror. His father lost his head in 1794 under the Guillotine and his mother was later released. She married Napoleon Bonaparte in 1796. He was involved in Napoleons coup d'etat in 1799. He joined his campaigns in Italy and Egypt and was created Viceroy of Italy in 1805. His stepfather adopted him in 1806 and he became his heir. He married Auguste Amalia von Bayern, daughter of King Maximilian I. Joseph and his first wife in May 1806. She was not very happy about this marriage, but they later fell in love with each other. In 1810 he joined Napoleons campaign against Russia and he stood by him until the end in 1814. He was banned from France and Italy. In 1817 he was created Duke of Leuchtenberg and Prince of Eichstädt by his father-in-law. He retired with his wife to Munich where he built the Palais Leuchtenberg, where they lived happily. They had seven children that were married into the royal houses of Hohenzollern-Hechingen, Portugal, Brazil, Württemberg, Russia and Sweden.
