Actor. He is considered the greatest Danish comic actor of the 20th century. The son of a captain in the merchant navy he was expected to follow in his father's footsteps and he started training as an ordinary seaman. However, his mind was always set on a theatrical career and encouraged by his mother he joined a touring theatre company playing bit parts. His talent for comedy soon became obvious and brought him to the attention of the owner of the ABC Theatre in Copenhagen where for a number of years be became the big star, often in partnership with fellow comedian Kjeld Petersen until the latter's untimely death in 1962. All the time it was his ambition to play more serious roles, and in 1961 he was offered the part of Lennie in John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men". His performance was hailed by the critics but the public in general could not quite accept him as a serious actor and he reverted to comedy. From 1947 to 1978 he starred in 90 Danish and 7 Swedish films and in a TV series from 1977 to 1980. He was by then established as the most popular comic actor in the country, and in 1974 the Queen of Denmark made him a Knight of Dannebrog. Early mornings in the film studio and late nights at the theatre combined with an excessive consumption of alcohol taxed his health, and during a performance at the theatre he collapsed on the stage being declared dead on arrival at the hospital. Today he is still as popular as ever. His films are available on DVD, and in 2011 a feature film, "A Funny Man", was released about his life, with Nikolaj Lie Kaas, known from the film "Angels & Demons", playing the part of Dirch.
