Herbert "Herb" Erich, Jr Schwartz was the only child of Herbert Erich Schwartz and Elsa Marie Roth. Herbert his wife Elsa and their son Herbert "Herb", left Elgin and returned to Germany in 1939. They lived with family in Openweiller and Wolgast. Herb's father was later declared 'missing in action' on the Russian front during WW II, and to date no one knows what became of him. Herb and his mother Elsa were able to return to America, after the end of WW II, escaping in 1947 from East Germany. They returned to Elgin, Kane County, Illinois where other family members lived. Herb was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the Army a master sergeant, from June 1952 to March 1954. Herb later became the owner of Herb's Bakery, which he opened in Elgin in 1954 operating with his mother Elsa and later with his wife Lynn. Herb's Bakery was originally located on National Street in Elgin. After Herb retired in 1995 his son and a daughter and his wife Lynn continued to operate the bakery, at 1020 Larkin Avenue. Herb learned the bakers trade while in Germany from his mother Elsa's family. Herb became the 9th generation of bakers, his children 10th generation ~ Herb's father was the brother of my paternal grandfather, Herman William Schwartz ~
