OBITUARY :
Our loving mom, DOROTHY ELIZABETH HOUGH SMALLWOOD, 101, went to be with the Lord on May 10, 2012, while at home and surrounded by her loving family and under the wonderful care of Hospice and her great caretakers, Theresa Luttrell, Bonnie Seal, Nancy Loudoun and David Smallwood.

Born July 26, 1910, in Summit Point, she was the daughter of the late George Mortimer Hough and Phoebe Belinda Howell Hough. She grew up on Federal Hill Farm, in the Mechanicstown area, and was the last of her immediate family.

Dorothy was a very gifted homemaker and talented artist, who attended craft shows in VA, MD, and WV. She was famous for her apple dolls and handmade quilts. Her quilt of the American Presidents is hanging in the Smithsonian Museum.

She is survived by her three sons: Walter Francis Smallwood, Jr., and wife Louise, Gilbert Perry Smallwood, Sr., and wife Catherine, all of Charles Town, and Lloyd Samuel Smallwood, and wife Gail, of Kearneysville; three daughters: Dorothy Lerona Barger-Fuller, Peggy Lee Johnson Roy, and husband Clarence Jr., all of Middleway, and Anna Belinda Carson-Walker, and husband Jim, of Harpers Ferry; 21 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her childhood sweetheart and husband of 70 years, Walter Francis Smallwood, Sr., two daughters: Mary June Smallwood and Judie Gaye Faith McDermott; 14 brothers, three sisters, and three grandchildren: Michael and Theresa Barger and Christopher Folmar.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 am, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at the St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. Father John Ledford officiating. Interment will be in the Edge Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 pm, Monday at the church.
