US Congressman. A member of the Democratic party, he served in the US House of Representatives from Pennsylvania's 24th congressional district for four consecutive terms from January 1945 until January 1953, from Pennsylvania's 26th congressional district for ten consecutive terms from January 1953 until January 1973, and from Pennsylvania's 22nd congressional district for two consecutive terms from January 1973 until January 1977. After completing his studies to become a physician, he began practicing medicine at Fredericktown, Pennsylvania in 1935. In 1944 he entered politics and was elected to Congress from Pennsylvania. 24th district, succeeding Democrat John Buell Snyder. During his 32 years in Congress, he served as Chairman of the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs and a member the US House Committee on International Relations. In 1976 he declined to run for another congressional term and retired from politics. He died at the age of 88.
