He was a survivor for more than 15 years from an earlier throat cancer. Steve was born in Elbert, Colo., to Charles and Rosetta (Harper) Schauer on March 1, 1927. When very young, his family moved to the Washington coast and then in 1941 moved to the Coeur d'Alene Carlin Bay area.
Steve served in the Army during WWII. He was a past president of St. Vincent De Paul and past grand knight of the knights of Columbus. He was a logger and also worked for Ohio Match Mill in his younger days. He joined the Coeur d'Alene Police Department in 1958, working his way through the ranks and retired after 29 years in 1978 as captain. Steve had many hobbies, but especially enjoyed woodworking and tole painting. He was an avid hunter and liked to fish. Steve married Patricia Schwartz in 1964 and had he lived they would have celebrated 45 years of marriage in October.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; son and daughter-in-law, David and Carla Schauer of Post Falls and daughter, Linda Simon of Tigard, Ore.; seven grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren. He was expecting his sixth greatgrandchild in September. A sister, Verna Davis of Renton, Wash., and brothers Chet of Texas and Ira, Silver Valley, also survive him.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, May 30, 2009, at St. Thomas Church in Coeur d'Alene. English Funeral Chapel is in care of the arrangements. The family prefers memorial contributions to St. Vincent DePaul, Hospice or a charity of your choice.
