Robert Hilary Adcock, known as "Mr. Robert" in McGehee, loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and benefactor died June 1, 2012 at the age of 88.
Robert was born September 4, 1923 in Dumas, Arkansas to the late Robert Ashton Adcock and Stella Ross Adcock.
He was born and raised in Dumas where he lived until graduation from Dumas High School. He attended Hendrix College until enlistment in the Army Air Corps, serving in the Pacific on the Island of Champagne off the coast of Australia during World War II.
After the war, he returned to Dumas working for his father. He then became engaged to Helen Lucille Bailey, who he had previously met while attending Hendrix College. After their marriage on June 4, 1947 they moved to McGehee where Robert owned and operated R. A. Adcock & Sons Company, a wholesale grocery business in Dumas and McGehee.
In 1954 he founded Adcock Seed and Elevator, the first soybean elevator in southeast Arkansas. He served on the Board of Directors of McGehee Bank, Union Bank of Monticello and Merchants and Farmers Bank of Dumas. He was owner and operator of several farms in southeast Arkansas. After his retirement in 1984, he remained active in farming, banking and philanthropic work in the area. His interests were hunting, fishing, and golfing with friends and especially with his grandchildren and their friends.
Robert was a long-time active member of First United Methodist Church of McGehee where he served on numerous boards, taught classes and supported his church in many generous ways.
In 1999 Robert and his wife Helen made a much needed commitment to the children of McGehee by inspiring, promoting and funding the Boys & Girls Club of McGehee. He was honored as Man of the Year in 2000 by McGehee Chamber of Commerce.
In recent years, Robert had his own "meals on wheels" for shut-ins, the disabled and elderly people of McGehee.
There are few lives in our community that have not been touched or inspired by his infectious laugh or humble generosity. He will be missed by many.
He is survived by his son Robert "Bunny" Adcock and his wife Carol of Conway; daughter Amanda Pambianchi and husband Charles of McGehee; grandchildren Hillary Adcock Wren and Ashton Adcock of Conway and Anthony Pambianchi and Anna Pambianchi of McGehee.
Preceding Mr. Adcock in death were his wife Helen Bailey Adcock, brother Loral M. Adcock of Dumas, and his sister Mary Francis Carson Baker of Odessa, Texas.
