Aviatrix. The fourth American woman to earn a pilot's license (being issued it on July 12, 1912), she became an exhibition flyer, gaining fame as "The Flying Schoolgirl", and as the first woman air mail pilot. During World War I, she served as a ambulance driver, but then developed tuberculosis, which ended her flying career. She later became an architect.
