Retired U.S. Army Capt. Orville E. Lee Sr. died Jan. 2, 1998, at Providence Alaska Medical Center surrounded by family. He was 79. Services were held at Kehl's Forest Lawn Chapel. The Rev. Nancy Sweeney officiated. A visitation preceded the services. Following the service, a wake and celebration of life was held at the Lee family home.

Mr. Lee was born Feb. 12, 1918, in Grand, Okla., to Orin and Mary Thelma Spence. He fought in the Aleutians and in Europe during World War II and was wounded twice. He married Elizabeth Hibbard on March 7, 1944, raising their family in Germany and the United States. Mr. Lee brought his family to Fort Richardson in 1956 and remained in Alaska upon retiring in 1961. An avid fisherman, bow hunter and world-class competitive archer, Mr. Lee quickly took up sled dog racing in Alaska, competing in the 1958 Fur Rendezvous World Championship. He was noted as a dog breeder and helped develop the lighter, faster sled dogs of today. He loved collecting new fishing equipment and supporting his sons' and grandchildren's academic, artistic and sporting interests. He enjoyed his home with its mountain views, wildlife and room to try new rods. Mr. Lee was a life member of the James G. Lee VFW Post 1685, founding member of the Black Sheep Bowmen and a longtime member of the Alaska Sled Dog Racing Association. He was preceded in death by his wife, Libby, and sons, James G. Lee and David Gallagher.

He is survived by his brother, Lloyd Lee of Oregon; sons, Robert L. Lee, Richard Barry Lee and Orville Edward Lee Jr., of Anchorage; grandchildren, Donny and Jay Lee, Adam and Michael Herrick, Dan Lahaie, Beth Lee, Jeffrey Jarman, Nicole, Sara and Savannah Lee, of Anchorage, Brian and Kevin Gallagher, Kitty Gallagher Berge and Kathleen Gallagher Giannandrea, of California; and nine great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Alaska Chapter, 240 E. Tudor Road, Anchorage 99503. Arrangements were handled by Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary and Crematory.
