Anchorage resident Matthew ''Gonaxtade'' Lee Sr., 70, died of cancer Nov. 24, 1999, at Alaska Native Medical Center. A service was at First Evangelical Covenant Church, 12th Avenue and C Street. The Revs. Phil Axelson and Nathan Toots officiated. Visitation was held at the church for one hour before the service. Pallbearers included Tony Smart, Jack Smart, Jerry Lee, Jim Brandmn, Amarjit Grewal and Ken Brandon. Honorary pallbearers included Matthew Lee Jr., H. Miles Brandon, James Brandon, Arthur Brandon, Edward Brandon, Donald Pelagio, John Smith and J.P. Pelagio. Burial was at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Mr. Lee was born Dec. 25, 1928, in Douglas, and he served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked in the research departments of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Bureau of Land Management until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of First Evangelical Covenant Church, the Moose Lodge, American Legion, Tlingit and Haida, and Alaska Native Brotherhood. His family wrote: ''Mr. Lee played the drums and guitar and truly enjoyed music. He had played in a band called Offbeat Five and had played at a gubernatorial inauguration, various places around Southeast Alaska and for his family. He also loved sport and commercial fishing and camping. One of his favorite places to be was in Seward with his family, camping by the tree, with campfires and fishing. ''(He was) patient, very loving, understanding and an excellent teacher to his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sons-in-law and daughters-in-law. His favorite flower and love of his life was his special wife, Betty.'' He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Williams and Marie Peters; daughter, Karen Mae Lee; aunt, Clara Wilson; and mother-in-law, Beatrice Brandon.

Mr. Lee is survived by his wife of 25 years, Betty J. Lee of Anchorage; daughters, Sharon Lee and Janet Breaks of Juneau, Beatrice Grewal of Anchorage, and Cheri Johansen of Dillingham; sons, Matthew Lee Sr. of Juneau, Tony Smart, Jack Smart and Jerry Lee, all of Anchorage; 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sisters, Mabel W. Pike and Flora Boyles of Anchorage, and Helen Sorabis and Elsie Brown of Juneau; brother, Tommy Peters; and uncle, Frank Wilson, both of Juneau; and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
