Nancy Jane Wells was the daughter of John Wiley Wells and Sarah Dickens. Her family, originally from South Carolina, moved to Alabama and eventually to Texas about 1850. Her parents helped established the Primitive Baptist Church at Antioch near Ratcliff, Texas.

Sometime before 1860 Nancy married William S. "Billy" Vaughn. Nancy and Billy had two daughters, Mary S. "Molly" Vaughn born in 1860, and Sarah A. "Sally" Vaughn born in 1862. There are some records that seem to indicate that Billy Vaughn was killed while fighting in the Civil War, but his burial place is unknown.

About 1865 Nancy married John Robert "Bob" Ritchey. Nancy and Bob had seven children.

Bob Ritchey died in 1895. Nancy was a widow until her death in 1915 in Palestine, Anderson County, Texas, at the age of 74.
