Army Sgt. William Ray Christensen of rural Elgin died Tuesday of wounds suffered Jan. 19 while on patrol in the Mekong Delta area of Vietnam.

He is the first Vietnam fatality from Elgin this year.

Sgt. Christensen was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond A. Christensen, Rt. 2, Box 164, Elgin. He was born April 20, 1947, and graduated from Central Burlington-Plato High School in 1965.

While at Central he participated in track, basketball and band and was in several school plays. He managed the basketball team.

After graduation, Christensen entered Wabash Junior College in Mt. Carmel and attended for two years. He enlisted in the Army in November 1967.

Christensen went through basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. and advanced infantry training at Ft. Polk, La. He left for Vietnam May 7, 1968.

Sgt. Christensen was on patrol with the 9th Infantry near Dahg Tan when he stumbled on a booby trap.

Surviving are his parents; a sister, Mrs. James Stout of Burlington; and a brother, Thomas, at home.

Funeral arrangements are being made at the Frederick Funeral Home in Hampshire.
