Jeffrey Scott Munson, 59, of Weed, Ca, returned home to his Heavenly Father on Friday, April 16, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. He passed away in his home with his family by his side. We know that he is in his Father's presence, free from pain and are thankful for God's promise that we will all be together in the Lord's house again.
Jeff was born on November 01, 1950 in Elko, Nevada to Earl H. and Genett C. Munson. He was the second born of three sons. Raised in Nevada, Utah and California, the Munson Family ended up in Weed in 1966, where Jeff went on to graduate from Weed High School, and College of the Siskiyous. It was also in Weed where he married Karen Davis, and had two children, Cheree' and Sean. Jeff continued his education and received a Bachelors degree from CSU, Chico. He relocated to Chico and went on to start his Real Estate Business. Jeff was a Real Estate Broker for over 30 years.
Jeff's love for the outdoors started at a very young age. He cherished many fond memories of his father teaching him and his brothers to ski, hunt and fish. His love for golf came from his mother who taught him the love for the game and was an avid golfer herself. He passed those family traditions on to his children. That love for the outdoors ultimately led him to become an avid hunter, golfer, and Professional Bass Fisherman.
During his professional fishing career, he won many State and National tournaments, including Clear Lake, and the Western Bass National Tournament. His favorite, the Merle Haggard Invitational Tournament at Shasta Lake, where he won for "third largest tournament fish" ever taken at Shasta Lake. He eventually partnered with his young son and went on to place 11th in the Western Bass National "Team Tournament." Jeff's perseverance and love for the sport paid off as he went on to win the U.S. Open Bass Tournament at Lake Mead in 1984, a title he has always been very humble to hold. He had the honor to fish with some of the best anglers in the world. He started the Chico Bass Club with fellow angler and friend, Bob Gamble, and went on to open a couple of other sports related businesses including Outdoor Sports Center and Fangard. Jeff and Karen later divorced and Jeff continued his businesses in Chico. He met Luann in 1990, and they have remained together since then, relocating back to Weed in 1999, where they have made Siskiyou County their home since that time.
Jeff has been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints since he was a young child, and was a member of the Mt. Shasta Ward, where he and Luann and his mother all attended. Jeff was a "family man", a wonderful son, and brother. He adored his children and was most proud to be a grandpa to Drake. He always said he liked being the "middle" boy, because he was able to appreciate having a younger brother to teach, and an older brother to learn from. Jeff was in many ways a "comedian". A trait he, no doubt, inherited from his mother. His sense of humor was contagious. Jeff will always be remembered for the loving, devoted family member and friend that he was and will remain, to all who love him.
Jeff was preceded in death by his parents, Earl H. and Genett C. Munson. Jeff leaves behind his daughter Cheree' Munson, son, Sean Munson and daughter-in-law, Kristi; grandson, Drake Munson; fianc��, Luann Melvill; her sons, Micah Melvill and Jordan Ownby; brothers, E. Gregory Munson, Bradley Munson, and countless other relatives and special friends.
A memorial service in celebration of Jeff's life will take place on Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 12:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 214 Adams Dr, Mt Shasta, Ca, 96067, Bishop Dan Taylor officiating. The family has requested that contributions, in lieu of flowers, be made to Madrone Hospice of Yreka, or to The American Cancer Society.
