His birthdate makes him the eldest child of James Ayer and Lucy Brockway Ayer, who married in 1811. I have a copy of a letter written to him by his brother Hazen, dated April 7, 1850. This document opens with the salutation, "Dear Brother," and closes with the sign-off, "Please Wright often, [signed] Hazen Ayer to Leonard Ayer (Respectfully)." Hazen was also a brother of Cyrus. An additional item in Hazen's letter is that he reported on Cyrus: "I am going to write to Cyras (sic) today for I have not heard from him for some time and I should be glad to see him before he goes to Ioa [Iowa] as I understand he contemplates Emigrating to that Country, but I hope he will give up the idea and stay nearer his friends."
Leonard moved from Illinois to Iowa, where he died. I am guessing that, some time after his wife's death in 1857, Leonard decided to join Cyrus in Iowa, to live near him or with him.
