Major General Massachusetts National Guard. Porter was a graduate of Harvard College and was reputed to have been the first Harvard graduate to enlist in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was appointed a lieutenant and served in the Massachusetts Volunteers in 1861. In 1865 he commanded the National Guard's twenty-second regiment with the rank of major. He was later promoted to Colonel and in 1869 promoted to major general and finally adjutant general in 1886.
