Historian and Philosopher. Graduated in Philosophy at Johns Hopkins University, he is known for being the best expert on German Philosophy among American philosophers. He was Professor of Philosophy at Berkeley until 1882 and subsequently at Harvard. In 1883, he was asked to write a History of the State of California, to which he devoted much of his time. His philosophy, as opposed to the pragmatism of William James, may be defined as a idealism that was influenced by post-Kantian ideas. He wrote and published "The Spirit of Modern Philosophy" and "The World and the Individual", considered his major work.
