George Washington Hughes was the son of Henry Hughes and Sarah Sallie Birdsong Hughes. Although his birth year on his tombstone is 1849, he was not on the 1850 census and on the 1860 census his age is 9.

Huntsville Times - Wednesday, 16 Sep 1936, G W Hughes' Funeral Held....George Washington Hughes, 87 year-old farmer of Taft, Tenn., Route 1, who died at his home at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon after a month's illness, was buried today. Funeral services were held at Charity Church at 2 o'clock. Burial was in Charity Cemetery. Pallbearers were Oliver Hughes, Alton Hughes, Cecil Hughes, Leonard Hughes, George Emrick, Ozro Tanner, and Harry Long all grandsons of the deceased. Mr. Hughes is survived by three sons, J A , George M, and D O all of Taft Route 1; six daughters, Miss Sallie Hughes at home, Mrs. Minnie Barlow, Mrs. C R Stewart and Mrs. Ed Long of Huntsville, Mrs. Bessie Brown of Taft, and Mrs. Ludie Tanner of Huntsville.
