23rd Alabama Infantry Company F is the unit listed in the paperwork for Washington Bell however the 51st in the military action story on ancestry.com matches the battles he was supposedly wounded in and he would be G W on those records. It was a very difficult time and his headstone could have the wrong information.

Wounded at New Hope Church in Civil War battle in Jonesboro, GA south of Atlanta with a gunshot wound to the forehead.

Wounded again in battle at Salisbury, N.C. May 15 1865 with another gunshot wound to the head

Washington's parents may have come to Ala with the J T McDaniel Wagon Train and he may have been born enroute.
