Charles was introduced to the gospel when he was about 14 years old. His wife-to-be-joined about the same time. They grew up knowing each other in school, church and social gatherings.
They had a great desire to emigrate to America and the Valley with the other saints.
Charlse had worked in the coal mines since he was seven years old due to the death of his father. He was a hard worker and made more money then most of the men because of his hard work. Sarah had a little shop in their home to help raise enough money to leave. Charles had promised his mother that he would not leave while she was still living.
After her death, Charles, Sarah, their two sons, His brother Thomas and his wife and family left Liverpool for America. They were apparently quite prosperous. They stopped in Bevier, Missoiuri, a mining town, where the men worked to gain additional funds. While there, Charles had several things happen that strengthened his testimony.
They arrived in September and went to Willard to live where their third son was born and died. They moved to Hyde Park where they lived in a dugout until a cabin was built. Later, Brigham Young issued a call for familiees to help settle land by Bear River. Charles, and a boyhood friend from Wales, took their families and moved there.
Benson neede roads, cacnles, schools etc., and Charles did more then his share. He made friends with the Indians and worked with them to keep their friendship. He was known as an honest and good businessman. He was a peadcemaker and held many positions in the church.
