Raised in the Central Valley of California, he served in the US Army and attended Fresno State College before being signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers. After paying his dues in the minors and being traded to the Yankees Tillotson spent the 1967 and 1968 campaigns in the Big Apple pitching in 50 games, triggering a memorable brawl by hitting the Red Sox' Joe Foy on June 21, 1967, and compiling a final record of four wins against nine losses with two saves, a 4.06 ERA, and 63 strikeouts. In 1971 he pitched for the Nankai Hawks of the Japanese Major Leagues then returned home where he worked for 30 years in the food distribution business, was a noted amateur country singer with a few records to his credit, and was a respected bowler.
