Civil War Confederate Major General. He graduated from West Point in 1842 and was commissioned an officer in the south topographical engineers. In April 1861, he resigned from the Union to join the Confederate Army and was assigned chief engineer of New Orleans, under General David Twiggs. Promoted Brigadier General, he then went to Vicksburg where designed the city's defenses and was made Major General in November 1862. In July 1863, when the city of Vicksburg fell, he was captured and prisoner exchanged in March, 1864. He then became chief engineer for the Army of Northern Virginia and Army of Tennessee, and toward the end of the war, he prepared the defenses of Mobile, Alabama. After the war, he opened a civil-engineering office in Savannah, Georgia.
