Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. A successful lawyer at the start of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate service in October, 1862 and was commissioned Colonel of the 53rd Georgia Regiment. He fought at Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Chattanooga and was wounded at Knoxville's Fort Sanders. He served in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign and was promoted Brigadier General in November, 1864. At the Petersburg siege, he was captured and was held prisoner at Fort Warren, Boston Harbor, until July, 1865. After the war, he practiced law and served in the Georgia State Legislature.
