Hannah Morton was born in Northport, Maine on the day after Christmas, in 1796. She was the daughter of Thomas Morton and Sylvina Gilkey. She spent her early years in Northport and married young. On July 5, 1813, she was married in Northport, Maine to William Elwell. The couple resided in Northport until 1838, when the family decided to join Hannah's family in Ohio. Unfortunately, within a year of moving, Hannah lost her husband. A few years later, she married Samuel Ashmore. She stayed married to him until his death on August 26, 1858 in Zanesville. Hannah Ashmore passed away on October 10, 1886 and burial was made in the Cedar Hill Cemetery. Here is her obituary which ran in the Newark Advocate on October 11, 1886

At the residence of her daughter, (Mrs. James Miller), on Sunday, October 10, 1886, at 8 o'clock p.m., Mrs. Hannah Ashmore. Deceased was born at Northport, Me., December 26, 1796; was married in that city, at the age of 15, to Wm. Elwell; they resided at Northport till 1838, when they moved to Putnam, O. She lost her husband in 1840, and was married again in 1844, to Samuel Ashmore, a prominent merchant tailor of Putnam, who died August 16, 1858. Since that time she has lived as a widow, and has, for the past eleven years, made her home with her daughter, Mrs. James Miller, of this city. The deceased was a member of the Baptist Church, having joined at Northport, Me., in 1816, and after moving to Putnam, she joined the Fifth Streeet Baptist Church in 1844, of which she was an active member until she made her home in Newark. A brother, living at Monticello, Mo., a sister in Harvey County, Kan., one in California, and one in Summit Co, O., survives her. Also two sons, two daughters, and a stepson, the Rev. Wm Ashmore, a Baptist missionary minister to China, who has visited her twice in the past season, and who, in her declining years had been a great comfort to her, as he had offered that consolation, which only a true Christian, as he is, could. w.
