James Walker Sollars was born on May 12, 1884, in Charleston, Iowa to William and Eleanor (Walker) Sollars. According to Robert Sollars, James was missing a hand from a birth defect. In spite of this, "he could do nearly anything anyone with two good hands could do. When it came to baseball, he proved to be the best hitter on the Charleston (Iowa) baseball team as well as a top-notch pitcher".

James resided in Chicago, Illinois in 1934. He married Bertha ? who had a daughter named Naomi. James died in Marshalltown, Iowa on September 11, 1961, at the age of 77 years, 4 months and 30 days.

Dies at 77, Rites Set

Funeral services for James W. Sollars, 77, of 8301 Luella, will be held at 10am Thursday at the Tews Funeral home, 79th and Phillips with the Rev. W. Peter West officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Mr. Sollars died suddenly Monday in Marshalltown, Iowa, while visiting at the home of his daughter. He had arrived there Saturday.

Born at Donaldson, Iowa, Mr. Sollars had resided in this community for the past 50 years. He was a supervisor for the Western Weighing and Inspection bureau and was in charge of the office at 102nd and the Calumet River before his retirement in June of this year.
