Peter/Pieter's parents were Cornelius & Apolonia (Schouten) DeHaaij. Cornelius' parents were Pieter Ariens De Haaij and Barbara Spruitenberg.

Cornelius and Apolonia came to America in 1871 and settled in Pella, IA with their children. Their children were Elizabeth "Barbara" (married John Vander Werff), Dirk, Anna Pieternella (married Simon Van Hemert), Pieter, and Evert Johannes (John).

Pieter and his wife, Hattie Rysdam DeHaai moved to Douglas County, South Dakota and raised their family there.
