Lewis was the son of Adam and Lucretia Potts Harper. He may have been married 3 times, according to census records. His first wife gave him a daughter and son. After the death of his first wife, he married Emily Holcomb, in Scott Co, MO around 1834. The 1840 census show us that they now have three more children a son and two daughters which we know their names to be Lewis, Martha and Rebecca. His two older children from his first wife are also living with them at this time. By the 1850 Census, they have moved to Dunklin Co, MO and Lewis is married to his 3rd wife Elinor Hawpner/Hawkner. One more child, a son, Adam was born to his second wife Emily, before she died around 1844. Elinor gave Lewis two daughters, Dorcus born 1847 Mary Jane born Jan 1851 in Indiana. Sometime between Feb and Aug of 1851. Lewis decided to move his family to Indiana. According to Dorcas Ann's obituary he dies along the way but the family is able to continue on to Gibson county, Indiana.
