Eva Mae Hofeling Eva Mae (Pemberton, Arnold) Hofeling, 82, left this earth to join our Lord on May 23, 2012 after a long and tenuous battle with cancer and emphysema. To our great sadness, the cancer finally won the battle. Eva was born on February 10, 1930, the second oldest of 11 children of John "Jack" V. and Mabel E. Pemberton. She married Walter N. Arnold in 1947, with whom she had three children, Walter Frederick "Fred" Arnold, Kittie Ann (Arnold) Dodd and Curtis W. Arnold. Eva joined her husband in southern California in 1957, where she gave birth to her third child, Curtis. After her divorce from Walt Arnold, she married Joseph R. Hofeling on May 22, 1964. Her three children were in attendance at the wedding. Her youngest child could be heard yelling out the window, "We married, we finally married" as they drove away from the minister's home. Eva's oldest child, Fred, was killed in a freak motorcycle accident on August 9, 1964. Her grief was deep and long lasting. She became very protective of her remaining children. Eva and her children moved to Port Huron in 1970. Her husband, Joe, joined them in 1972 after Eva's daughter, Kittie, was seriously injured in a car/pedestrian accident. Eva and Joe literally gave away their home in California and remained in Port Huron to be near Eva's family. Eva was a strong-willed woman with a great sense of humor and a love of card games. While she enjoyed Skipbo, Euchre and Rummy, Skipbo was by far her favorite card game. She was an avid gardener. Coffee and chocolate, particularly Hershey bars, were her favorite snacks. Eva enjoyed garage sales in the summer. She was somewhat reclusive. She hated to leave the house in case someone might stop by to play cards. She enjoyed watching crime shows and comedies and reading Detective magazines. She was feisty and talkative. She loved old-time country music, Christmas carols, hymns, and silly songs. Her favorite foods were hot dogs, eggs, mashed potatoes with gravy and ice cream. Eva is survived by her two remaining children, Kittie Dodd and Curtis Arnold and his wife, Bonnielee; two grandchildren, Corey Arnold and Felicia (Scott) Muxlow; and two great grandchildren, Derek Lee Muxlow and Kellyann Stebbins; brothers, William "Bill" Pemberton and Daniel (Diane) Beedon; sisters, Nancy Jackson, Barbara Post and Betty King; sister-in-law, Janet Pemberton; long-time friends, Jay Brandt, Dorothy Palmateer and Fawn and Hope MacPherson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; her son, Fred; parents, John and Mabel; brothers, Theodore, John and Frank; sisters, Evelyn and Mary Margaret "Maggie;" and her beloved dog, Tasha. Visitation will be 1-3 and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. The Reverend Max Amstutz will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery. Thank you for all your love and prayers during this very difficult time. I am sure that God was listening and your prayers helped give Eva's family strength. Please honor her memory by making a donation to the local Blue Water Humane Society or the American Cancer Society. To send condolences, visit pollockrandall.com.
