John P. Caspar, retired Hancock orchardist, dies
John Page Caspar, 82, a Hancock orchardist, died Saturday afternoon.
Born in Denver, Colo., he was a son of the late Hattie Page and Charles J. Caspar.
He had resided in Washington County [MD] most of his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Suella Rinehart Cohill Caspar.
He was a retired orchardist. He was educated at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, Pa. and Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
He was the leading orchardist in the Hancock area, former chairman of the Maryland State Apple Commission, director of the Appalachian Apple Service, president of the Maryland Horticultural Society, director of the International Apple Association, past president of the Washington County Area Council of Boy Scouts of America, past president of the Rotary Club of Hancock, past president of the Berkeley Springs and Hancock Little Leagues, and a charter member of the Fountain Head Country Club.
A requiem mass will be celebrated by Fr. Daniel M. McGrath at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hagerstown.
Burial will be in the Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh.
There will be no viewing.
The family requests the omission of flowers.
Arrangements were handled by the Thompson Funeral Home in Clear Spring.
