(Veteran) BRODBECK - William D., Col. U. S. Army (Ret), 86 yrs., of Hilton head Island, SC, died Thurs., July 8, 2004. He was born Dec. 2, 1917 in Omaha, NE, the son of William and Emilie Elsasser Brodbeck. He was a graduate of the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science in Military Science, and a Masters degree in International Relations from George Washington University. He marred Lucille Jones of Crowley, LA Feb. 14, 1943 in Ojai, CA. He served in the National Gaurd and was called into Federal Service shortly before Pearl Harbor. He served his country with honor for 32 years as Company Commander in WW II in Europe, Battalion Commander in Korea and Brigade Commander 1st Infantry Division in Viet Nam. He was on the faculty at the Army War College in Carlisle, PA for three years.

His military awards include Combat Infantry Badge with Star, Bronze Star, Silver Star, Legion of Merit with 1 Cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart with Cluster, Air Medal with Cluster and Viet Nam Croix de Guerre. During Viet Nam he was awarded the Service to Mankind Award by the Sertoma Club of Omaha in recognition of his efforts to build an orphanage for over 100 Vietnamese children.

After retiring from the Army in 1969 he became a stock broker and moved to Hilton Head Island in 1972 and retired from Smith Barney in 1995. He was one of the founding members of Christ Lutheran Church and president of the Church council for six years, and a choir member. He was a longtime former member of Island Sounds Barbershoppers and he was on the original board of The Seabrook, serving for nine years.

Colonel Brodbeck loved God, his family, his country, the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Atlanta Braves.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lucille; 4 daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Bill Schunk, Omaha, Karen and Bill Moore, Virgina Beach, VA, Emily and Paul Starry, Hilton Head Island, Camille and David Chamberlain, Mt. Pleasant, SC; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Ruth Finlayson and Carol Brodbeck, both of Omaha.

MEMORIAL SERVICE with Military Honors will be held Mon., July 12th at 2 pm at Christ Lutheran Church. Inurnment will be in the Christ Lutheran Church Columbarium.
