Major League Baseball Player. Born in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, he was a first baseman making his debut for the Boston Red Sox on September 12, 1940. For six seasons, he played with the Boston Red Sox (1940-43), Philadelphia Phillies (1944-45) and Chicago White Sox (1948). He ended his career with a record of 285 runs scored, 632 hits, 18 home runs, 230 runs batted in and .268 batting average. In retirement, he was the head coach of the Dartmouth University baseball team for 21 seasons (1954-77), winning the Eastern Intercollegiate League championship four times (1963, 1967, 1969–70). He died at age 87 in Norwich, Vermont.
