Served in Co. G 9th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry

Following provided by Dennis Brandt:

Likely an orphan, in 1850 he and several apparent siblings lived with and/or worked for John Hall Orris in Saville Township, Perry County. He is not found in the 1860 census in Perry County.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Perry County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 2 as a private with Co. F, 177th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 5, 1863. He claimed to have served five weeks with an emergency militia unit during the summer of 1864, but the name he gave (7th Pennsylvania Militia) in the 1890 Veterans' Schedule makes no sense for the time frame. He last enlisted in Harrisburg May 30, 1864, mustered there September 2 (no explanation for the long wait) as a private with Co. G, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and honorably discharged at term's end May 29, 1865.

He married Mary S. Ernest February 27, 1870, in Perry County and fathered Sallie Eldalura (b. 01/01/72 - married William Cameron Smith) and George Ernest (b. 12/09/73).
