Dr Barto, Scholarship Group Member, Dies at Age 54
Dr Philip Stephan Barto, Examiner at Carnegie Institute of Technology, died today at the Pittsburgh Hospital after an emergency operation. Dr Barto joined the staff at Carnegie Tech in 1915 as Instructor in German. In 1923, he was appointed Examiner.
Dr Barto was born Oct 10, 1884 at Ithaca, NY. Was a graduate of Ithaca High School, Cornell University and the University of Illinois. From the latter, he received a A.B.A.M. and Ph.D. degrees.
He taught in an Illinois High School before going to Carnegie Tech, he had been on the faculty at the University of Illinois. He published several articles on the German language.
At Tech, Dr Barto was Chairman of the Committee of Undergraduate Admission and was Secretary on the Committee of Scholarship.
He is survived by four sons: John, Nathaniel, David and Philip Barto
Four daughters: Mrs Frank Nakola and the Misses Winifred, Mary and Ann Barto.
His home was near Evans City, PA.
