James, was the husband of Katherine J. Tueller of Salt Lake City, the son of Betty J. Tueller of Midvale Utah and Kenneth J. Tueller who had predeceased him. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 1, 1967 in Salt Lake City Utah and arrived in Vietnam fur duty on October 14 1967 where he was assigned to Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
On April 10, 1968 During Operation Jasper Square the Marines of Company L approached the hamlet of Le Nam and encountered heavy small arms fire from an entrenched enemy force. The men, initially pinned down, assaulted the enemy in the hamlet through enemy automatic weapons fire and grenades. The fire fight with the enemy force ended with the Marine Company securing Le Nam at the cost of four Marines being killed and fourteen wounded.
PFC Tueller was one of the casualties, he was wounded in both legs and evacuated for medical treatment.
James was later transferred to serve with Mobile Training Team 2, 1st Combined Action Group, III MAF, and on December 11, 1968 while spraying defoliant a kilometer southeast of Binh Son in Quang Ngai Province an enemy mine was detonated critically injuring two Marines. Evacuated for medical treatment Sgt James Tueller died at the NSA Station Hospital on December 23, 1968 and LCpl William Ingram died at the USNH in Oakland California on January 22, 1969 from the wounds they had sustained.
