Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Grandfather of the famous general by the same name, he was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute. When the Civil War broke out he joined the 22nd Virginia Infantry and was quickly promoted from captain to colonel. Wounded twice, the last one mortally, he died on the battle field during the Third Battle of Winchester.
