James was the son of James Pinkney Bryant and Rhoda Caroline Kirby. His father died in 1878 and his mother moved to Chickasaw Co to be near her Kirby relatives. His brothers, John K and Joseph Johnson Bryant moved to Memphis when grown. James A returned to Lafayette Co, only to find himself a pauper and in the poorhouse where he died and is buried.
