She received her education in the schools of this county and commenced teaching in April 1884 and continued in the profession until April 1926, or for a period of 42 years.
She united with Providence Primitive Baptist church in Sept 1893 and was baptized by Eld. S. B. Jones, the third Sunday in Oct. She served as clerk of the church for 21 years.
She was united in marriage to James M. Cate May 16, 1926, who departed this life July 6, 1945.
Preceding her in death were her father and mother, two sisters, Abbie Jones and Jessie M. Davis, two brothers, John W. Jones, an infant brother Aaron Welker and a nephew John Rhodes.
Those surviving ar a sister Cora A. Rhodes, who is a patient in the Iowa City hospital, five nephews and nieces, as follows: Clyde and Clement Davis of Seymour, Ia; Mrs. Vernon Curtis, of Seymour, Mrs. Edmond Allan, Madison, Wis, Mrs. Alfred Allan, Guthrie Center, Iowa.
She also leaves six step children and their families: G. D. Cate of Peoria, Ill., S. R. Cate of Winfield, Kansas, H. F. Cate, Wichita, Kan., Earl Cate of California, Mrs. Albert Fisher, Blakesburg, Ia, and Mrs. John Anderson, Plano, Iowa with many other relatives, friends, school boys and girls all with whom she delighted to meet thru her remaining years.
For about three years of Aunt Mary's later years, she was without sight but due to her faith and medical science her sight was restored. She wrote this closing verse during her sightless days:
"I know not when nor where this cloud will lift
But some how, some whre I see through the rift
A beautiful sunrise coming in view,
Tinted with rose 'neath the dawning blue;
And a rainbow promise not so far---
Whe I shall see the Morning Star."
Funeral services were held at the Jones church by Elder Clyde Johnson of Kirksville, Mo., and interment in the Jones cememtery."
