Emil immigrated to the United States in 1892. He left Finland because it was becoming crowded and to escape serving in the Russian army. Finland was part of the Russian empire at this time. He eventually arrived in Milnor, North Dakota, which was as far as he could go by train because that is where the tracks ended.
Emil homesteaded 160 acres in Ransom County, ND. In 1906, he purchased 160 more acres from the Northern Pacific Railway Company.
On April 15, 1900, Emil married Caroline Pierson, and they had eight children: Henry ("Hank"), Walter, Arthur, Emma, Esther, Raymond, Clarence ("Kelly"), and Ella.
Emil was proceeded in death by his father, Mathias (5/04/1851 - 3/11/1897); mother, Anna (12/13/1852 - 4/27/1894); six siblings: Selma, Maria, Ida, Peter, Hulda, and Aina; and his wife, Caroline, who died on September 25, 1935 at the age of 56.
Emil Granlund died on May 27, 1957 at St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge, MN.
