William Thorpe was the son of William J. Thorpe, Sr. and Mary Mackie Thorpe. He lived in Scranton his entire life. He served in the US Army Air Corps from 1942 until 1945, the majority of that time in India. He married Elizabeth Jane Jones on November 27, 1948, in Scranton. They had one child, Gayle.
