Moulton, Iowa
February 9, 1923

Elizabeth Edwards eldest daughter of
Wm. and Marilla Edwards was born
in Laurel county, Kentucky, March 12,
1833, and died January 29, 1923 in
the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. M.
Floyd, at Peru, Kansas, being at the
time of her death 89 years, 10 months
and 5 days of age.
She grew to womanhood in the
place of her birth. In 1850 she and
her parents came to Van Buren coun-
ty, Iowa, making the [ ? ] journey in
an ox-drawn wagon. The following
year they came to Appanoose county
taking a homestead near Moulton. In
this immediate vicinity she made her
home till last March at which time
she went to Peru, Kansas to live with
her daughter, Mrs. Floyd.
In 1850 she was united in marriage
to S. P. Elam, who had journeyed
with the family from Kentucky. To
this union eight children were born
five of whom have preceded the moth-
er in death, as has the husband. The
living children are: Mrs. Sara Floyd,
Peru, Kansas, D. H. Elam, Carr, Colo-
rado, and M. S. Elam, Grove City,
Minnesota. These with her three
brothers, namely, Dan, William and
Madison, together with [ ? ] of oth-
er close relatives and [friends?] mourn
her going from us.
In early life she became a flower
of Christ and when she came to Moul-
ton nearly 75 years ago, she became a
member of the local Christian church
and was an ardent worker therein
throughout her sojourn here.
The type of her womanhood and her
Christian spirit united to make her a
dear soul in Israel. To know her was
to love her. And to know her was to
receive an inspiration to greater de-
votion to Christ and His church and
more sacrificial service to mankind.
She has left a heritage that will not
soon pass away.
Mrs. Elam, in spite of her age, was
a woman of exceptional vitality and
looked after her affairs[?to?]within a
couple of days of her death. She kept
up her personal correspondents, writ-
ing in a clear, legiable hand of mat-
ters that were of interest to her cor-
respondents. She was a great hand
for knitting, and several pairs of
warm mittens have been [seen ?] the
past week which were of her handi-
work. Last fall Mrs. Elam made a
trip to Kansas out to Colorado and
back, making the trip alone and un-
assisted - these little things showed
the strength and vissitude of the wo-
man who within a few weeks would
have lived to ninty years.
