Capt John B Wallace, son of Thomas and Mariah (Beal) Wallace, married Sabrina Kent, daughter of Benjamin Franklin and Anna (Smith) Kent around 1847. Together John and Sabrina had 7 children: Maria A (b. 1848), James P (b. 1850), Francis C (b. 1853), Charles E (b. 1854), David L (b. 1856), William Nelson (b. 1858) and Reuben Lamson (b. 1861) Wallace.

The tragedy of the Coastal Maine Diphtheria Epidemic of 1862 became very real for this young family on 16 Oct 1862 when their 9 year old daughter, Francis succumbed to this dreadful disease. On Oct 19, 1 year old Reuben L passed, followed the next day by his brothers, 6 year old David L and 12 year old James P. On 26 Oct, the oldest child, 14 year old Maria A passed. On 08 Nov, Sabrina's husband and the children's father, Capt John B died at age 35 years. 8 Days later, Charles E, 8 years old died, leaving a bereaved mother and sibling, William Nelson Wallace.

On 14 Oct 1871 Sabrina married Bassom Dorr Grant, son of Edward and Elsie (Dorr) Grant. Bassom was a recent widower, as his wife and mother of his 10-children, Lovee Dorr had died. Bassom died 16 Aug 1887 in Columbia Falls. Sabrina Kent Wallace Grant lived until Sep 1912. William Nelson Wallace, the surviving child of Sabrina and John Wallace married Augusta Small in 1882, and they had a daughter Flora M Wallace (1882-1942). William lived to 83, passing 01 June 1942 just 19 days before the passing of his daughter.

Seldom do family history recorders have to report such terrible tragedy as befell this family, but it is very important to remember their lives and grieve their loss. A reminder of how fragile life can be.
