Willard Moody was the son of Dr. Frank E. Moody, born Sweden, and Jonina Rose Peterson, born Iceland. He attended 7th and 8th grade at Mount Horeb, Wisconsin. He went to Gustavus Adolphus College and the University of Minnesota.

Willard Moody served on the Mexican boarder in 1916 with the University of Minnesota Battery. He enlisted September 1917, and received his commission at an officers' training camp in Atlanta, Georgia, and went to France December 1917. He fought at the battle of Chateau Thierry and the second battle of the Marne. He plane was shot down 15 July 1918. He received the Distinguished Service Medal and the Croix de Guerre with palm.

His parents lived at 1408 Park Avenue, Minneapolis circa 1920.
