Elsie Smith was born Oct. 26, 1905, in Adams County to Alvin Mort and Ida (Pagel) Winkler. She married Earl H. Smith on Dec. 12, 1924, in Creston. She had retired from Graham's Department Store as a clerk. She also had been employed by Hawkeye Security in Des Moines and Bussanmas Oil in Winterset. A resident of Madison County since 1924, Elsie was a member of the Pythian Sisters, Good Neighbor Club, Monday Canasta Club, the Birthday Club and the First Christian Church in Winterset.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, and three brothers.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty Sawyers (husband Keith) of Winterset; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
