Artist. While still a young man he developed an interest in art and showed great skill in his technique. He became a student of renown artist Daniel Huntington, accompanying Huntington to Europe in 1838 to continue his studies. During that time he visited the great art centers of Europe including Milan, Rome and Florence in Italy as well as cities in France. While in Europe he painted what later would be considered some of his greatest works which included "The Roman Girl." "Begging the Secret," and "Thou Art Gone,". In 1840 he returned to New York City, New York and continued his studies and by 1842 was elected a National Academician, and later was elected Vice President of the National Academy of Design. He painting were prolific in number and several hundred paintings included living subjects. His most important works included "Hope," "Legend of St. Christopher," "Apple of Discord," "Portia and Bassanio," and "Cupid Begging his Arrows,". Many of his painting hung in the galleries of Europe where they were highly acclaimed.
