Genevieve Catherine Stone Gutfleisch (91) died peacefully in her home in Canby, Oregon at 7:30pm on Thursday, May 3, 2012.

Gen was born in The Dalles, Oregon on September 27, 1920, to Gertrude and Dr. Alvin B. Stone, and lived a long and rich life. She was the youngest of seven children, all of whom predeceased her: Kenneth, Gale, Roland, Ralph, Sister Naadene Ann, and Monsignor William Stone. Her daughter, Christa Sprinkle (Portland), her sons, Kevin (Canby) and Tim Gutfleisch (Estacada), her grandchildren, Buffy Mercep (Lake Oswego), Mike Sprinkle (Washougal, WA), Fritz Gutfleisch (Portland), Erika Augustyn (Tualatin), and Katie Fosnick (Puyallup, WA), as well as seven great-grandchildren survive her. Gen's husband, John Gutfleisch, of 48 years predeceased her in 1990, as did her son, John Michael Gutfleisch (Wasco), June 2011.

Gen spent nearly her entire adult life in service to others beginning with her PTA activities in Portland at Holy Redeemer parish, multiple organizational roles in St. Rita parish, and multiple Archdiocesan committees beginning in 1964. In addition, she was Lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Augustine's in Lincoln City from 1988-1993, and volunteered at Food Banks in Lincoln City and in Canby, Oregon.

In 1966 Gen began her long and esteemed tenure with the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW), including her role as President, and at the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) serving on national committees beginning in 1975. In 2001 she became Province Director for the Council, serving Oregon, Montana, and Idaho through 2003. In all of these roles, she served as organizer and mentor.

The depth of her commitment was recognized in 2010 when the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women awarded her the Woman of Achievement for 2010. True to her style, she was completely shocked when she received this award at Marylhurst, in the surprise company of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Gen's funeral service will be conducted at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 498 NW 9th Street, Canby, Oregon on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 1:30pm. Interment will be a private family service at a later date at Willamette National Cemetery.
