Obituary in THE GADSDEN TIMES dated August 25, 1896: Marion Burke, an aged citizen of Attalla, died at his home in that city on last Wednesday. His remains were interred in Burger Cemetery. (**)

Death Date: Calendar for August 1896 shows 25th on Tuesday, so last Wednesday was August 19, 1896.

After the death of Eliza Means Burke, Francis Marion Burke married in Etowah County on Jan. 31, 1895 to Julia Agerton (Marriage Book "E", page 226) Julia Agerton was a daughter of Martha Agerton, a widow, listed in the 1860 St. Clair Co., AL census and 1870 and 1880 Etowah Co. census.

Census records 1860 and 1870 Cherokee, AL and 1880 - Etowah Co., AL enumerates the Burk family (note surname Burk)... Francis Marion born about 1835 to 1837. His wife, Eliza, born about 1836 to 1837. They had 11 children as per the census and other records: James K., Sarah J., Paralee Burke, Francis (female), William, Charles Leslie, Robert, Barkley Lynn, F.M. "Frank", Viola Burke McDaniel and Clemon C. Burke.

Viola Burke married in Etowah Co. Dec. 26, 1891 David McDaniel. Her death date is unknown, but Mr. McDaniel remarried and was buried in Jefferson Co., AL. Believe that this is Paralee who in 1910 was widowed and she and five children lived in Trenton, Dade Co., GA. Her sons were coal miners.

Francis Marion Burke was First Lieutenant in Company G, 48th Alabama Infantry. If he ever had any kind of stone is is not visible in the cemetery, nor was it ever listed in survey list dating back to the 1940's. Many graves were marked by mountain rocks and sandstones. It is believed that his grave was marked by a rock.
