Rev. Hayward Lester Tenney, Sr., was the son of Elihu Deco Tenney, and Ivy Tenney of Buckhannon, West Virginia; 3rd great grandson of James Tenney, Revolutionary War Hero. Hayward served in WWII; and became an Ordained United Methodist Minister. He married Izella Mae Ours in Upshur County, West Virginia on May 15, 1945. He came to North Carolina with wife, and daughter, Vicki, in 1962 to finish college, graduate from the Seminary, and become an Ordained United Methodist Minister.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Elihu Deco Tenney, and Ivy Ann Tenney, both of Buckhannon, West Virginia; brothers,James, Arnold, Oren, Luther; sisters,Urcle B. Tenney, and Tressie Tenney Ware, all of Buckhannon, West Virginia; and a daughter, Judy Mae Tenney. His wife, Izella, passed away in 2002; his son, H.L. Tenney, Jr. also passed away in 2003. He is survived by a brother, Claude Tenney, of Buckhannon, West Virginia; his daughter, Vicki Tenney; two grandsons, Hayward Louis, and Lester; two granddaughters, Tonia and Angie, and several great grandchildren.

Hayward was a very warm hearted, gentle, and considerate man. He was a loving husband, loving father, and a true Christian.

Hayward Lester Tenney's family originated in Great Limber, Lincolnshire, England. He is a direct descendant of Thomas Tenney, that helped establish Rowley, Massachusetts in the 1600s. He was very proud of the history of the Tenney family since their arrival in America.

He is a direct descendant of Thomas Rogers (Signed the Mayflower Compact), Mayflower Passenger; Matthew Hutton, Archbishop of York; Cardinal Henry Beaufort; Edward III King of England; Edward II King of England; and many others.
