Graveside services for retired Judge Thomas "Buddy" Edna Martin, 88, of Rockdale were held Saturday, April 21, 2012, in Lower Spring Creek Cemetery near Danville, Arkansas.

Judge Martin died Wednesday, April 18, 2012.

He was born on the family ranch in Pleasant Hill on Dec. 10, 1923, to James Alfred and Lillie (Carter) Martin.

He was a Lexington High School graduate and went to work in Kingsville for the Missouri- Pacific Railroad.

In 1942, he joined the U. S. Navy and spent the remainder of World War II traveling the world, serving as an armed guard. Judge Martin served on five different ships, including the USS Star King, which was shot out from under the crew.

He worked for Standard Oil in Houston after being discharged from the Navy, then he worked at Alcoa's Rockdale Operations for 32 years until his retirement in 1985.

He was a man of varied interests and his life ran the gamut from chopping cotton during the Depression, naval duty in World War II, working the potrooms at Alcoa and serving as president of the United Steelworkers Local No. 4895, then a stint as municipal judge.

Judge Martin was a member of Rockdale Masonic Lodge No. 414 and was also a Shriner.

He enjoyed cars, owned all brands at one time or another and raised eyebrows by driving around in a cherry-red Dodge Prowler while he was municipal judge of Rockdale.

Judge Martin was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, L.R. "Bud", A.O. "Babe" and Robert Hervey "Coot" Martin; and a sister, Lillie "Sis" Havens; also, two nieces and a nephew.

Survivors are his wife, Jo Ann (George) Martin; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Belle George and Lavelle George; numerous nieces and nephews; and two faithful friends, Margie Gates and J.D. Morrison.
