Wife of the legendary comedian Larry Fine. Mabel and her sister Loretta were popular vaudeville dancers, and made a name for themselves as the Haney Sisters. In 1921 they were performing on the same bill with Larry, and eventually merged to become the Haney Sisters and Fine. The three of them worked together until 1925, playing at venues such as the RKO, the Paramount Theatre, the Orpheum, the Keith-Orpheum, and the Delmar. Mabel and Larry married in 1927, after she converted to Judaism at his insistence. They were known as a very outgoing fun-loving couple, frequently throwing lavish parties and suppers. They also loved to go to the race track and casinos. Since Mabel didn't like the idea of being a housewife, they lived in hotels. Among these hotels were the President Hotel in Atlantic City and the Knickerbocker Hotel in Maryland. It was in the President Hotel that their children, Phyllis and Johnny, were raised. (Sometimes Mabel and Larry are erroneously listed as the parents of the sportscaster Warner Wolf.) In the late Forties they finally stopped living in hotels and bought their own house, a beautiful old Mediterranean-style mansion in the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles. Sadly, their son Johnny died on November 17, 1961 at the age of twenty-four, after having been in a car accident. Six years later, Mabel herself died of a sudden heart attack.
