John William Allen passed away at home on Sunday, 10/30/2011, surrounded by his family.

John was born 8/26/1923 to Frank Allen, a Great Northern RR engineer, and Hildur Peterson, a portrait photographer, in Seattle WA. He (and brother Frank) grew up in Seattle, graduating from Queen Anne HS in 1940.

He began studies at the University of Washington in the College of Forestry, but enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps to serve as a B-17 navigator in the 91st Bomb Group, 401 Squad. He flew 35 missions from Bassingbourne airbase in England (8/3/1944 to 1/6/1945) over Germany during WW II and completed his tour of duty as a Captain ferrying aircraft to Guadalcanal and New Guinea.

John returned to UW for his Bachelors in Forest Management and married Rosemary Bond of Kirkland, WA, on June 14, 1947 and later completed a Masters of Forestry. He worked as a Seattle Longshoreman and Idaho forest firefighter while in college and then for Nettleton Timber Company in SE Alaska and Washington.

John returned to the UW to become assistant technical director of the Institute of Forest Products. In December 1951 he began as a forester at Bloedel Timberlands, Inc. and worked in the forests of the Olympic Peninsula, Whatcom, and Skagit counties. He was promoted to Forest manager, VP and General Manager, then to President in 1974 over the company in Washington and Alabama.

John retired in 1993 while continuing as a trustee on the Board of Directors and consulting in Brazil, Uruguay, Australia and New Zealand.

The Allen family welcomed daughters Rosemary (1949), Robin (1952), and son Kevin (1954); living in the Silverdale family home since 1959. John always took time to serve his community and church.

In I958, he was instrumental in founding Whatcom County school to aid the physically handicapped. He also served as: chairman - Community Chest Group in Kitsap County; conservation counselor to Boy and Girl Scouts; patron -Bellingham YMCA and played on its men's volleyball team; Vestry member, reader, and many other roles at St. Paul's Church in Bremerton and later joined St. Charles Anglican Church in Poulsbo; Co-founder - Northwest Hardwoods Assoc.; Chairman - South Puget Sound Chapter Society of American Foresters; Trustee (1952 on) -Washington Forest Protection Assoc.; President- Seattle "Hoo Hoo Club" (providing scholarships for the Col1ege of Forestry); President - Foresters' Alumni Assoc. 1961-63; Guest College Lecturer and taught fire courses and statistics at the UW 1952.

John was presented the 1982 Honored Alumnus Award of the UW Forester's Alumni Association. John was an avid UW Husky football and basketball fan, enjoyed backpacking, flyfishing, photography, travel and family gatherings.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Rosemary Bond Allen, and his children: Rosemary Hildur Allen (living with Cerebral Palsy in a Seattle group home), Robin Marie Richter and her husband George of Nekoosa, Wisconsin (and John's granddaughters Erin and Shannon along with 2 great grandchildren Aiden and Isabella), The Rt. Rev. Kevin Bond Allen and wife Stefanie (and grandson John Mansell) of Bellingham WA.

A memorial service will be at St. Charles Anglican Church, 2 PM this Saturday Nov. 5 at 20295 Little Valley Road NE, Poulsbo, WA 98370 Ph (360)-779-3524.

Memorials may made to "PROVAIL" and note "John Allen Memorial Fund, to care for the housing of Persons with Adult Disabilities, and sent to St. Charles.
